Mouchette.org

I find the website mouchette.org very strange. When exploring this “artistic” website, there is much nonsense and confusion.

Mouchette’s website is supposed to be of a thirteen year old girl. The first page gives her name, age, and a list of qualities about her. There is a picture of her as a child and on other pages pictures of her as an adult. The pictures do not look like they are of the same person. The strangest thing about the first page is that there are sounds of crying and bugs flying around pink lilies. It is really eerie.

The photos of the lilies on the first page are tiled so that they do not line up and create a chaotic feeling. Many other pages have tiled images in the background also. There is a random dropdown menu that links the viewer to other pages. Each of the pages is strange in their own way. There is a link to a suicide kit asking viewers “what is the best way to kill yourself when you’re under the age of 13?” Maybe I just don’t get what the author is trying to do, but I think it is quite disturbing.

Further in the site the viewer comes to a page called “Flesh and Blood”. This page has picture of the author licking glass so that it looks as if she is licking the viewer’s computer screen. It then asks you to lick the monitor and see what Mouchette’s tongue tastes like. Throughout all of the pages, the site poses interactive questions for the viewer to respond and also asks for an email address quite frequently. Mouchette.org is an interactive sight but I am not sure for what reason.

Mouchettte.org is a very different website that I discovered a few years ago in my web art class. I think the site continues to grow and be updated. Though disturbing and confusing at times, the site is interesting and draws the viewer in. I still do not know the intent or meaning of the site but it is creative and others seem to like it. I guess I may never understand Mouchette and her life.

  1. this site has been going on for decades, I was a member in the 90s....

again I think u use confusing terminology..... what do u mean by author? do u mean artist?

also try to be more specific in ur commentary... saying that something is strange does not say much...

again, post the link as an embed in the code, not the title...

and think that maybe, just maybe, this site is art, hence u know knowing the purpose or intent.... not everything is black and white....
